Select Microphone by Polar Pattern
Depending on how the capsule is built, a capacitor mic can be made to offer any of the three main polar patterns, omni (where the mic is equally sensitive to sound coming from all directions), cardioid (sensitive mainly to sounds coming from the front) and figure-of-eight (equally sensitive front and rear but ‘deaf’ to sounds coming 90 degrees off-axis).
Depending on the design, microphones that offer multiple polar patterns either use interchangeable capsules or a specially designed dual-diaphragm capsule that can recreate all the polar patterns via simple electrical switching. sE ribbon mics are figure 8.
